Chiropractors and in-house billing staff know there are plenty of reasons for denied claims, and none of them are pleasant to deal with. Using the wrong modifier – or no modifier at all – is one of the most common.
Modifiers are used to distinguish specific CPT codesand are vital in the world of chiropractic practices. A simple way of describing them is that they more clearly describe codes, and prevent those codes from being lumped in with other services billed that day.
While there are plenty of chiropractic billing modifiers to go around, here are the ones that should be used with extra caution, or in some cases, avoided altogether.
